Knowing that I'm a Christian
by Kenny Moorer
I recently had a “biblical” conversation with a man and during the conversation he NEVER once referred to a Bible verse. Specifically I discussed with him what the Bible said about being a Christian and he shared with me that he knew he was a Christian. To my inquiry of “How do you know?” he replied, “I just know.” I don’t often get that response. It’s usually the argument that one simply needs to believe in Jesus. Well, I agree with that assessment. One simply does need to believe in Jesus. The issue is what does it mean to believe in Jesus. The Ethiopian eunuch was told to believe in Jesus (Acts. 8:37). Read all the verses in that context. The Philippian Jailor was told to believe in Jesus (Acts. 16: 31). Read all the verses in that context. It’s overwhelmingly obvious in Acts 2, that Peter’s (and the other apostles) sermon was intended to create belief in the Jews about the Messiah. The believed and asked what else they needed to do. Read all the verses in that context.
Folks, the only way we KNOW that we are a Christian is to DO what we are told to do.
No one in scripture was ever saved because he/she did what they wanted. The scripture teaches that people are saved when they do what God wants. The “good book” serves a lot of purposes, but I cannot think of a more valuable purpose than to TELL me what to do to be saved. Can you think of a more valuable reason? I don’t have to guess about my salvation or question my salvation; I can know what God requires, then I must do it. Yes, I must believe in Jesus, but read what the Bible says that means.
If you’re here this morning and want to talk more about this critical issue, please talk more with us today. We want to ALWAYS preach and teach only what the Bible teaches. And we ALWAYS want to be found trying to practice what the Bible teaches. Let’s talk more.
