Too Good to be True?
It is a relaxing evening; you have just gotten comfortable on the couch for some peace. Suddenly, your phone rings and you do not recognize the number. But you answer it anyway. You then hear that you have just won a two-week cruise to the Bahamas with all the expenses paid. The only catch is you need to provide your credit card number. You reply, “If all the expenses are paid, why do you need my credit card num—” (CLICK!)
The other person hung up. You did not really win that trip. This would be a scenario where one could say, “if it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.” This occurs often. When something appears to be too good like a free offer, we typically become skeptical. We think there must be something wrong or there is a catch. This is a normal reaction considering all the deception that occurs in our world. But this phrase is not applicable in all situations.
Jesus the Son of God came down to this sinful, evil world. His love, compassion, and sacrifice were manifested in His life and in His death on the cross. Even though man hated Him and did not ask for His sacrifice, He showered mankind with love and offered the opportunity for reconciliation with God. He died, not because man deserved it, but because of His care and mercy for man.
Paul says it this way: “But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3.4-7).
It may sound too good to be true. The great thing is that it is too good, but it is in fact true. Jesus the Son of God loved us and sacrificed Himself for us. Amazing! But that should not be our only reaction to the undeserved love He has shown.
Think back to my opening scenario about the cruise. If you actually did win that random cruise to the Bahamas, I would imagine you would share that information with others. You would be excited about that gift and then tell others about it. How much more so should we spread the news about the excellent gifts God has bestowed upon us?! We should all grow in love and care for the lost souls! Jesus died for each and every soul. Let us share that good and true news of Christ and His undeserved love!
