The Transfiguring Touch

There is, what Oliver Wendell Holmes called, “the transfiguring touch” in the narratives we find in the pages of the Holy Writ. Of what it tells us about our Sovereign God. His faithfulness. His mercy. And His unending love. Read it. And study it with confidence. For His covenant promises are true. The defining moments of our lives are found there. God who became man. Who selflessly gave of Himself. Humbled Himself even as a servant. This King of kings and Lord of lords who sympathizes with our weaknesses. And who died in the most egregious and humiliating fashion on a tree so that we might be saved. And thus reconciled to the Father.

I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

Proverbs 8.17

The proverbial sands of time are sinking. The dawn of heaven breaks. And so it behooves us all to be diligent to find ourselves a people who seek after Jehovah (Heb 11.6). Who trust in His promises and in the eternal reward that awaits the faithful. Time is indeed but a span. And thus with a shaking hand, a darkening eye, a drowsy brain, we press on. For we must, without surcease, keep in the forefront of our minds and hearts this burning question: What can I do for the cause of God? Even when the world, the flesh, and all the devils on hell are arrayed against us and assail us, those who dare to join the standard of Almighty God fight on. And the narratives we find in our daily studies compel us to heed the gospel call. Pressing on to the upward calling. To walk worthy of that calling. And lead souls to Christ.

Sad to say our knowledge and our appreciation of Biblical history are, at times, curiously and regrettably deficient. The truth is many of us have largely neglected the subject. Tossed to and fro with the busyness of life and the snares of the Tempter.

But lo, a stir is in the air. What resonance! What echoes!

“Tell me the old, old story. Write on my heart every word.” Fill our coffers with the priceless valuables found within His inspired Word. Alive. Active. Flawless. Lighting our path. Shielding those who take refuge in it. In Him (Psm 18.30).

“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

Luke 11.28

And keep it we must. With reverence.
